Extreme crowding in laying hens during a recurrent smothering outbreak

چکیده

Background: Piling, a behaviour where hens crowd together, is referred to as smothering if mortalities result. Smothering considerable concern for the egg industry, yet vastly understudied. Methods: During an outbreak of recurrent smothering, continuous video footage captured commercial, free-range flock over 35 days. We describe piling observed and potential associations with productivity health indicators. Results: Forty-eight piles were filmed, maximum density 187.93 birds/m2 up 1204 birds in one pile. Piling occurred same house location on 33 34 observation days, first evidence regularity behaviour. Despite extreme bird densities, we did not find between extremity but water:feed ratio temperature range. Conclusion: This study describes most level reported literature offers new insights into this problem its consequences.

Jejunal calcium permeability in laying hens during egg formation.

The permeability of the upper jejunum to water, calcium, potassium, sodium and chloride was measured in the immature pullet and then in the laying hen before and during egg-shell calcification by an in vivo perfusion procedure. Jejunal calcium permeability was constant throughout egg formation. Thus, the increase of net absorption during shell calcification was not due to enhanced mucosal capac...

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in Laying Hens

The bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae can infect a wide range of mammals (including humans) and birds. Disease outbreaks (erysipelas) have been considered unusual in chickens internationally, but outbreaks with high mortality and egg production losses have been diagnosed in Swedish laying hen flocks every year since 1998. Different aspects of E. rhusiopathiae infection in chickens were exa...

Comparative gonadotrophic potency of anterior pituitaries from cocks, laying hens and non-laying hens in molt.

A bulk of studies on the assay of gonadotrophic hormone content of the anterior pituitary from the animals in various reproductive conditions has been done. Riley and Fraps(1942b) assayed pituitary glands from chickens in various reproductive stages, judging the gonadotrophic potency by the increment of uterine weights of immature mice, and concluded that glands from non-laying hens produced a ...

Effect of Wet Feeding on Feed Conversion Efficiency in Laying Hens during Summer Season

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of wet feeding on feed conversion efficiency in laying hens during summer season. The study was carried out on 192 pullets of eight weeks age (distributed to four groups). The feed offered to chicks consisted of starter diet up to 8 weeks of age and grower diet up to 20 weeks of age. From 20 weeks onwards, birds were provided with layer diet u...

Laying Performance and Egg Quality of Hens Supplemented with Sodium Bicarbonate During the Late Laying Period

This study was conducted to determine effects of dietary NaHCO supplementation on egg 3 production and egg quality during the late laying period. Hisex Brown layers, 54 wks of age, were blocked according to the cage location and then assigned randomly to receive one of four diets containing 0, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.4% NaHCO for 75 d. Each diet was replicated in 6 groups; each consisting of 2 cages con...
